The Spirit of Christmas Sponsored Spar 2001

Fighting for others

The Chongshin Do members with Ben Vowles & his brother Harry - Centre.

A smaller number turned out this year to take part in this great anual event - this didnt affect the atmosphere - as with last year we were helping out one of our own - the brother of Club Instructor Ben Vowles and as always the spirit of the event was electric.

Members fought for over an hour

Sometimes something special has to happen to evoke the true spirit of Christmas. On Wednesday 19th December the members of Chongshin Do - Way of the Spirit - showed the true meaning of Christmas and made one young man's day and changed his life as he knows it.

Harry Vowles (brother of Ben ) suffers from cerebral palsy. The members of Chongshin Do were fighting to raise money to buy a special bike to enable Harry to get about easier - This was the definition of true POWER - the ability to change Someone's life - and in the Spirit of Christmas, Harry now has what he needs for Christmas and a happier future.

A show of superb semi-contact sparring followed by the destruction of wood pleased the crowd.

-
Chris Burton tangles with James Eccles(left) & John Skeldon (right)

-
A show of control & technique - however acidents happen - here Sensei Jim Lloyd takes one between the legs - ouch!

Breaking techniques were demonstrated next by some of the Black Belt members - showing the power and skills nessasary to break wood.

-
Richard Barrett lines up an impressive 4 piece multi break.

As always Sensei Paul Taylor demonstrates a spectacular break with a 5 piece multi break - 3 with one leg without puting the leg down. Finishing with a fantastic jumping reverse turning kick to suspended piece- Great stuff.

A number of awards were then given out for members who have excelled throughout the year

Students of the year Awards
Last years top students were
Bloxwich - Phil Williams, who is progressing very well, helps coach and now only one step from Black Belt.
Delves - Jamil Aslam - a great year for Jamil trained hard and progressed very well to Red Belt - helps in coaching and is a valuable member of the club. Still cant believe he is only 14 ! Sutton - Ben Vowles - Ben had a great year with two Full Contact fights, Instructors course and training over 3 times a week took him quickly to Red Tag.
Four Oaks - Arron Dovey - it was a good year for him with him having his first Full Contact fight, helping in Instruction and achieving his Black Tag and only one away from Black Belt (he hopes to take later on this year). Well done to all.

To finish of the evening the total raised at the event was anounced - a fantastic £1200 was raised - this figure could rise as many could not make the event but were still raising money - so once again the members of Chongshin Do have changed someones lives at Christmas - well done all and thank you for your continued support.
